Ogni bioparco, al termine del tour, dovrebbe avere un’ultima attrazione, ove prima di entrare compaia una scritta simile a “ed ora l’animale più pericoloso della terra”, ed entrando scoprire riflessa la propria immagine in enormi specchi.

L’uomo tanto intelligente, troppo intelligente, è stato capace di trasformare questo mondo in una serie sempre più avanzata di invenzioni che hanno via via cercato di prevaricare su Madre Natura senza mai riuscire a sostituirsi ad essa, ed appropriandosi indebitamente di un qualcosa più grande che non vuole padroni né regole, perché già possiede regole ed equilibri millenari, la sua perfezione; è un qualcosa che a mano a mano rivorrà ciò che è suo, probabilmente cercando di eliminare chi è la causa del suo sconvolgimento.

I cambiamenti climatici in atto e stimati per i prossimi anni segneranno per sempre mutazioni nel mondo rispetto a come lo conoscevamo fino a ieri. La più ovvia e terribile conseguenza di possibili catastrofi climatiche è la probabile carestia a cui molti popoli dovranno far fronte; la conseguenza naturale della carestia è la migrazione dei popoli; la risposta alla migrazione di massa incontrollata è il blocco, la guerra, la perdita di milioni di vite innocenti.

Possiamo aprire una piccola parentesi sui dati registrati negli ultimi tempi. Ad esempio, il tasso di crescita di alterazione climatica dovuto alle emissioni di clorofluorocarburi (gas serra) ha creato il cosiddetto “effetto serra”. Se da una parte la natura ha risposto all’aumento di anidride carbonica prodotta, secondo la rivista Science, ad un aumento del 6% della copertura verde del pianeta, l’aumento delle “zone verdi” non è però omogeneo. Tradotto si legge “la Terra non riesce più a depurare l’aria, vitale per gli organismi viventi”. Questo non vuole però significare che più anidride carbonica riusciremo a produrre e meglio si starà. Secondo gli esperti infatti, “…la temperatura così facendo aumenterà sempre di più, e con due gradi in più la produttività vegetale si abbasserà, fino ad arrestarsi del tutto. Come conseguenza di tutto ciò, si verificherà un rallentamento della Corrente del Golfo, che mitiga le temperature altrimenti fredde dell’Europa, farà diventare l’Inghilterra prima, e tutta l’Europa poi, la “Siberia Occidentale”, portando addirittura iceberg e animali solitamente caratteristici dell’estremo nord del mondo. Anche la fauna, spesso dimenticata, subirà cambiamenti significativi, che influiranno anche sull’umanità. L’innalzarsi della temperatura favorirà, assieme ad un aumento del tasso di umidità, la proliferazione di parassiti, diminuendone il tasso di mortalità invernale. Le malattie trasmesse all’uomo da questi parassiti (come malaria e encefalite) potrebbero subire un’impennata. Si finirà come nel Carbonifero, 300 milioni di anni fa quando il clima era caldo umido, il pianeta ricoperto da foreste con piante giganti e rigogliose e gli oceani caldi come un brodo. Al momento, è evidente, si fanno molte ipotesi, basate però su modelli di evoluzione reali, ed i dati già registrati non fanno intendere un’inversione di tendenza.

L’avidità dell’uomo, la voglia di denaro e potere, ci ha condotto ha subire emissioni inquinanti, per soddisfare gli appetiti di imprenditori, disposti a sacrificare l’unico mondo esistente, per se e per i propri figli, in cambio di profitti più facilmente raggiungibili con scorciatoie nella produzione, che non prevedono l’utilizzo su grande scala di energie rinnovabili, più onerose e meno efficienti. Solo uno stato al momento utilizza per il 96% energie rinnovabili: il Costa Rica. Troppo poco per un mondo sempre più alle corde.

L’uomo, come si diceva all’inizio, è troppo intelligente, ma lo è anche troppo per essere troppo libero; riuscito nella difficile impresa di compromettere equilibri perfetti creati in milioni di anni, non ha più scusanti e necessita essere costretto a regole ferree per salvare se stesso. Ma anche e soprattutto perché la terra non gli appartiene, semmai vale il contrario, e soprattutto deve condividerla con altre specie terrestri, che hanno già visto la distruzione del 50% del loro habitat. Se non riuscirà a comprendere ciò e a fare di tutto per invertire la tendenza, arriverà l’ora X e meriterà (meriteremo) l’estinzione.

Every zoo at the end of the tour should have one last attraction, where we could find an inscription reading something like “And now the most dangerous animal on Earth”. We could discover our own reflected image in huge mirrors.

Man is so intelligent, too intelligent, that he is transforming this world into an increasingly advanced series of inventions that have gradually tried to prevail over “Mother Nature” without ever being able to replace it. He is unduly appropriating of something bigger that does not want masters or rules, because nature has its own millenary rules, balances, its perfection, and She will gradually take back what is hers, probably trying to eliminate the cause of her disruption.

Today’s climate changes and those estimated for the next few years will forever mark changes in the world as we knew it until yesterday. The most obvious terrible consequence of possible climatic catastrophes is the probable famine that many people will have to face; the natural consequence of famine is migration; the answer to uncontrolled mass migration is blockade, war, the loss of millions of innocent lives.

We can open a small parenthesis on the data recorded in recent times. For example, the increase rate of climate change due to emissions of chlorofluorocarbons (greenhouse gases) has created the so-called “greenhouse effect”.  If, on one hand nature has responded to the increase in carbon dioxide produced, according to the magazine Science, to an increase of 6% in the green coverage of the planet, the increase in “green zones” is not homogeneous. Translated it reads “the Earth can no longer purify the air, vital for living organisms. However, this does not mean that the more carbon dioxide we produce, the better we will be”. According to the experts, in fact, “…the temperature in this way will increase more and more, and with two more degrees the plant productivity will decrease, until it will stop completely. As a consequence of this, there will be a slowdown in the Gulf Stream, which mitigates the otherwise cold temperatures of Europe, where firstly England, and then the whole Europe will become the “Western Siberia”, bringing even icebergs and animals usually found in the extreme north of the world. Even the fauna, often forgotten, will undergo significant changes, which will also affect humanity. The rise of the temperature will favor, together with an increase of the humidity rate, the proliferation of parasites, reducing the winter mortality rate. The diseases transmitted to man by these parasites (such as malaria and encephalitis) could undergo a surge. We will end up as in the Carboniferous, 300 million years ago when the climate was hot and humid, the planet covered by forests with giant and lush plants and the oceans as hot as a broth.

At the moment, it is evident, many hypotheses are made, based, however, on real models of evolution, and the data already recorded, does not indicate a reversal of the trend. Man’s greed, the desire for money and power, has led us to suffer from polluting emissions, to satisfy the appetites of entrepreneurs, willing to sacrifice the only existing world, for themselves and for their children, in exchange for profits more easily reached with shortcuts in production, which do not use renewable energy, more expensive and less efficient. Only one state currently uses 96% of renewable energy: Costa Rica. Too little for a world that is increasingly going into the corner.

Man, as we said at the beginning, is too intelligent, but he is also too intelligent to be free; he succeeded in the difficult task of compromising perfect balances created in millions of years, he has no more excuses and needs to be forced to strict rules to save himself. But also because the land does not belong to him, rather the opposite is true, and above all he must share it with other species, which have already seen the destruction of 50% of their habitat. If he is not able to understand this and to do everything to reverse the trend, the hour X will come and he will deserve (we will deserve) the extinction.
